Marco Smith is a junior running back at Sapulpa and last year rushed for over 1100 yards and 12 tds. This year Smith is having another solid year for the Chieftains as they’re battling their way through 5A competition. Smith first started playing football back in the third grade and over the years has come to appreciate the camaraderie that the sport provides.
“My favorite aspect of the game is the brotherhood you make with your team,” Smith said.
So far the season has gone well for Sapulpa and Smith said that the team has been accomplishing many of their goals.
For Smith and the Chieftains their desire to win starts off the field and they always put in effort in the weight room and practices. The Chieftains follow the “practice like you play” mentality to keep themselves ready and prepared for gamedays.
Smith holds himself to a high stand on and off the field and expects the same from his teammates.
“I try to bring accountability so my team knows I hold them accountable and they know to hold me accountable,” Smith said.
Smith is a fan of the game and has been playing football since he was in the third grade. Over the years he has grown up watching all levels of football and often looks to model his game after players he finds inspirational. Currently he is taking notes by watching film of Saquon Barkley and Miles Sanders.
Smith has had success on the field since he was given the opportunity.
“My first game starting at Sapulpa is one of my favorite memories,” Smith said. “I had three touchdowns that game.”
As his junior season continues on Smith is continuing to hone in his craft and working hard to improve. After high school Smith plans to continue both his education and football career at the next level by attending college upon graduation. Until then, he’s going to be looking to make the most of his opportunities under the Friday Night Lights.
