Sapulpa’s Traber Lusk – Cross Country Spotlight – Presented by Wendy Vanarsdel – Shelter Insurance

Traber Lusk will make his varsity running debut for Sapulpa High School this fall. The freshman runs both cross country and track and also plays basketball. He also enjoys fishing in his free time.

“I have been running since kindergarten and playing basketball since kindergarten too,” Lusk said. “I like track and field the best.”

The son of two runners, Traber has big shoes to fill. His mother, Brandy, ran cross country and track at Oklahoma Baptist University.

“My mom told me her fastest mile and fastest 5k times from college. It pushed me because I wanted to try and be the fastest in my family,” Lusk said. “I was able to beat those two this past season. She knows
how hard she had to train and she has explained that, too.”

Lusk’s father, Jeremy, is Sapulpa’s head varsity track coach and has provided him similar advice: “To always push myself and not cheat the workouts, or myself, or my team.”

Lusk is eager to showcase what his hard work has earned him this season. Asked what he’s excited for, Lusk said, “competing at the high school level and running with a great group of people and leaders
on this team.” His goals for the next four years: “Win state as a team, run a sub-16:00 5K, put myself in a position to run in college.”

“I have great teammates and coaches who help me, so really just pushing myself past what I think I can do,” Lusk said. “I think I can learn from the older runners. I’ve been watching them and learning from them for many years, I also think I can help lead by doing things right and pushing myself everyday.”

Lusk’s faith is an integral piece of his life. He attends Arrow Heights Baptist Church in Broken Arrow.

“My faith is important to me because, without God, I wouldn’t be where I am at today,” Lusk said.
