Sapulpa High School freshman Jocelyn Brown has spent nearly a decade building endurance in cross country, but her impact on the Lady Chieftains reaches beyond her own place in the race. Brown, a varsity runner, said the supportive environment at Sapulpa is one of the school’s strongest qualities.
“What I love most about SHS is how they are always there to cheer you on,” Brown said.
That support is something Brown works to pass along to her teammates. After competing in cross country for nine years, she understands that encouragement can matter as much as the miles put in during training.
“I’ve competed in cross country for 9 years. I love cheering on my teammates. Letting them know there is always someone cheering for them,” Brown said.
Brown is optimistic about the Lady Chieftains’ potential this season, especially because of the talent surrounding her on the varsity roster. She believes the team has an opportunity to make its mark at the state meet.
“We have some amazing varsity girls, and I believe that we will podium this year at state. So that makes me excited,” Brown said.
Her competitive schedule extends well beyond cross country. Brown also participates in JV and varsity volleyball, school track and volleyball with Virago, a club team. Balancing those commitments requires focus, a quality she said has been emphasized by her coach.
“Coach Nick, because he pushing me to do my best and he is always there to listen,” Brown said.
Brown also draws motivation from her sister, Jasmine, who has remained a steady source of support through difficult moments.
“My sister Jasmine, she has always encouraged me when I didn’t want to run, and I felt like giving up. She was always at the finish line cheering me on,” Brown said.
As a freshman, Brown is already looking toward a future that could include studying marine biology or pursuing a career as a doctor at NASA. For now, she remains focused on improvement, her teammates and the next finish line.
