When cross country training begins, most of us are still lounging around a pool somewhere. Schuyler Stephens is a member of the Sapulpa varsity cross country team and recently told VYPE Magazine that his training in the off season is paying off.

“My season is going great, my favorite meet so far has been our home meet at the Sapulpa Invitational because I felt very in touch with the freshmen [Skyer Samuel and Meeko Coon] who were with me the whole race,” said Stephens.

This season Stephens said he focused on improving his mental approach to long runs.  

“The area I feel I have most improved at is staying focused during the race. By that I mean staying mentally focused during the race and keeping up with a runner who is slightly better than me and staying with them during the race,” said Stephens.

Stephens said he enjoys his teammates and the different personalities on the team.

“I love the different personalities that my teammates all have. A lot of us are spread out grade wise so we all think and act a little differently. Skyer Samuel has impressed me the most because he has stepped up as a freshman by running his best time at the RSU night meet.”

Now in his senior season, Stephens plans to attend Tulsa Community College after he graduates and plans to major in Computer Science to pursue a career in software development. Stephens also participates in National Honor Society, and Athletic Leadership Council at Sapulpa HS. 

Stephens said he is learning to play guitar in his free time and has found an influence for his musical talents.

“One of my influences is James Hetfield who has led me to music and learning how to play the guitar. I like to play the guitar outside of running.”
