Sapulpa’s Isaac Shelton – Football Spotlight – Presented by Chad Haberman Oklahoma Farm Bureau Insurance

Isaac Shelton, a senior at Sapulpa High School, has an inspiring story that reflects resilience, dedication and an unwavering commitment to football and himself. “I’ve had a lot of personal losses, but on the other hand, I’ve been blessed with loved ones that have stepped up to care for me. I came from a small town that has produced a lot of football greats and that encouraged me to work hard and believe in myself.”

Shelton’s journey in football began with a desire to support his family and a passion fueled by watching his idol, Ray Lewis. “What inspired me to play football was knowing one day, I could help out my family when they needed it. I’d watch highlights of Ray Lewis on YouTube and say to myself that’s what I want to do one day!”

This season, the Sapulpa High football team has developed a strong sense of camaraderie and unity. “We have a close brotherhood and would go through thick and thin for each other!” As a senior, Shelton has taken on a leadership role, emulating a mentor from his sophomore year. “I’m the old man on the line this year. I try to emulate a guy that was a senior when I was a sophomore. I try to lead by example.”

One of the most memorable moments in Shelton’s football career was a victory against McAlester. “A memorable moment was winning against McAlester.” This victory, along with the community’s unwavering support, has been a driving force behind his performance. “Community support is everything. I’m always amazed that our entire community turns out for us whether it’s for pep rallies or parades or games. Even folks that don’t have kids in our school show up for us. It instills pride and a desire to make them proud.”

Shelton’s advice to younger players is simple but profound: “Never give in, be persistent, be coachable, and lastly, learn to be a good teammate!” His role model, both on and off the field, is his faith. “Both on and off the field, I look up to God as my role model.”

Shelton is grateful for the support of his coaches, his guardian (“my G”), and the memory of his grandmother. After high school, he plans to pursue a career in business and continue playing football at the collegiate level, as well as hopes of the NFL Draft. “My plans are to continue my academic career in business, and absolutely I plan on playing football for another four years at least!”
